The Legacy of Parents' Marital Discord: Consequences for Children's Marital Quality
Very interesting full-text study by Booth & Amato, 2001
This longitudinal study "provides the strongest evidence yet that marital quality (as reported by spouses) is transmitted from parents to children. Furthermore, these links remain even after controlling for other parental characteristics that might affect offspring's marriages." The research also "indicates that offspring's marriages respond not only to the level of discord in parents' marriages at a single point in time, but also to shifts in parental discord. This finding suggests the usefulness of considering the trajectory of parental discord over the span of childhood."

Legal Expert on Munchausens-By-Proxy Syndrome
A mental disorder in which the parent -- most often the mother -- projects onto or actually induces medical illness in her children (did you see the movie The Sixth Sense?) with the goal of eliciting repeated medical (or any) attention.
There are many cases of this syndrome occurring in mothers with personality disorders. It is a dangerous form of child abuse that can lead to unneccessary treatments, surgeries, and even the death of the child, and any woman suspected of this behavior should be thoroughly evaluated for her competency as a co-parent.

Splitting: Protecting Yourself While Divorcing a Borderline or Narcissist
By William A. Eddy, Attorney, Mediator and Clinical Social Worker
from the review:
"This book is for anyone facing a potentially high conflict divorce, whether or not your spouse meets the criteria for a Borderline or Narcissistic Personality.
Its explanations of WHAT TO EXPECT and suggestions for WHAT TO DO can be used by anyone, including your attorney, your therapist, your family and others involved in your case.
Borderline and Narcissistic Personality Disorders are mental health diagnoses, describing rigid patterns of long-term interpersonal problems and personal distress. When those with these disorders go through a divorce, it can trigger intense emotions, misperceptions and the unconscious defense mechanism called "Splitting."
The resulting behavioral problems and allegations often surprise everyone involved -- family, friends, and even legal professionals. Most commonly, the spouse (live-in partner, etc.) becomes a Target of intense emotional attacks which may include physical abuse, verbal abuse, distortion campaigns and legal abuse (false allegations, frivolous litigation, and sometimes unwarranted criminal charges).
This book explains common problems when those with these personalities enter the legal process of divorce. The goal is to help you avoid predictable pitfalls, reach a reasonable settlement when possible, and protect yourself and your children when necessary."

Book by Susan Allison, highly recommended by a number of divorcing NonBPs.
"Allison offers a unique blend of important practical information for every stage of marital breakup, support for long-term emotional upheaval, advice for dealing with lawyers, mediators, friends and family and the view that "marital bonds are never completely severed" (the relationship simply changes). Recognizing the long process as "not just the tremendous loss of another person; it is the loss of the dream you have believed since childhood," she details the possibility of proceeding with respect, compassion and love for everyone involved, including yourself, from the first inkling of a separation to the mixed memories that resurface even years later."
